Use of two Bayer DMI fungicides with trinexapac-ethyl on Poa annua or creeping bentgrass greens

Background

In recent years, there have been reports of negative interactions with the use of certain demethylation inhibiting (DMI) fungicides and trinexapac-ethyl (Primo MAXX®) on Poa annua or Poa annua/creeping bentgrass greens. These turf types, particularly Poa annua greens, on a Primo MAXX program, can have a negative interaction when certain DMI fungicides or DMI fungicide combination products, are being utilized for disease control, such as anthracnose. Yellowing and thinning of Poa annua greens may be the result. The potential for over-regulation of turfgrass growth exists when DMI fungicides and Primo MAXX are used regularly.

In 2009, Bayer initiated research trials investigating the interaction of Chipco Triton® FLO, and ReserveTM with Primo MAXX applications on Poa annua and bentgrass greens. These products were compared to other DMI fungicides such as Banner MAXX® and Concert®.

Results

Results from five research trials indicate that the use of Reserve results in significantly less potential for over-regulation when used within a Primo MAXX tank mix program on Poa annua greens. With regard to turf quality, the following observations were made.

Turf Quality

Reserve + Primo MAXX resulted in much better turf quality than Banner MAXX + Primo MAXX and Concert + Primo MAXX (See charts below).

Turf Quality for Triton FLO + Primo MAXX was equal to or better than Banner MAXX + Primo MAXX and Concert + Primo MAXX.

Conclusions

EAST:

Reserve + Primo MAXX exhibits excellent turf quality and can be used together.

Although displaying a high degree of safety, Triton FLO + Primo MAXX may exhibit greater turf regulation than Reserve + Primo MAXX.

WEST: (west of Mississippi)

Trials indicate excellent turf quality with Triton FLO + Primo MAXX when applied in May/June time frame.

Reserve may be used with Primo MAXX.

These are results from trial FE09NARRR2HR3, which was conducted on a Creeping bentgrass/Poa annua green in New Jersey. There was no negative interaction when Reserve was tank-mixed with Primo MAXX. Applications were 6/23/09 and 7/7/07. Two turf quality ratings were taken in July.

Poa annua

Reserve + Primo MAXX results in excellent turf quality on greens containing Poa annua.

Reserve out performed Banner MAXX, Concert and Triton FLO tank mixtures with Primo MAXX under any conditions.

Reserve is an outstanding choice to use on Poa annua greens in a Primo MAXX program.

Creeping Bentgrass

Excellent turf quality and density results from using Reserve with Primo MAXX.

Triton Flo

Poa annua

Use a program with Triton FLO + Primo MAXX tank mixed with Chipco® SignatureTM. For tank mix applications with Primo MAXX closer than 21 days, rotate Triton FLO with a non-DMI, such as InterfaceTM.

Do not use Chipco Triton FLO + Primo MAXX when the turf is under summer stress.

Creeping Bentgrass

Excellent turf quality is achieved when used with Primo MAXX.
