DAVIS CAPTURES ESAGCS CROWN AT GLEN RIDDLE'S MAN-O-WAR
Jim Davis, superintendent at Greenhill Yacht and Country Club fired an
81 to go along with a first round score of 82 shot at Greenhill last
month. His total of 163 bested Mark Longanecker, assistant
superintendent at Eagles Landing, by 1 shot. Longanecker shot a 78/86
for a total 164. This is Davis's first victory, considered a Major on
the ESAGCS tour. Davis has long awaited to get this "monkey off his
back", being runner up in the thrilling 2005 championship where he was
beaten on the 5th hole of the sudden death playoff, by that year's
champion Ed Brown of Rehoboth Beach Country Club. Davis will be crowned
champion at the August Picnic at Hog Neck in Easton, Md.
Not to be forgotten in the days events at Glen Riddle, Ken Bolon,
superintendent at Nutters Crossing captured the ESAGCS Net Championship.
Congratulations to both Jim and Ken!
GREAT DAY FOR THE ESAGCS AT GLEN RIDDLE
Great weather and a fantastic golf course awaited the members of the
ESAGCS at the July meeting in Ocean City. Many thanks to Mike Salvio,
CGCS of Glen Riddle and Eric Snelsire, Director of Grounds at Glen
Riddle, for hosting the meeting. The golf course was in fantastic shape
even after torrential downpours had passed through the region the
evening before. Individual Gross and Net play was the event for the day.
Jim Davis was the gross winner with Tim Davisson capturing the net 1st
place prize. Thanks again to all the staff at Glen Riddle for making our
July meeting a huge success.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
It is August and that's time for the smell of pig in the air and the
sound of mallets on crab claws. Get ready for Hog Neck! We are back in
Easton again hosted by Superintendent, Owen Sutherland and Director of
Golf, Mike Kaminskas. Donnie will once again be roasting the pig and the
Wye River will be supplying our crabs! Golf format will again be a
scramble and make your own groups. I will group you up if you are not in
one.
Handicaps
For those of you without an official USGA Handicap, I have found a
website that offers the service free of charge, www.stracka.com. You
will need to join an official group in your area and start posting your
scores. It is very easy to do. You can then print off an official USGA
Handicap card.
TIDEMAN WINS CAROLINAS PGA SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP (50-55) DIVISION
Congratulations to Paul Tideman for winning the 50-55 division of the
Carolina's PGA Senior Amateur. Paul shot 75-72 for a total of 147 for
the two day event. Golf cart sales must be dipping with scores like
that!

A sincere thanks to Jim Davis and his staff for hosting the June 2009 ESAGCS meeting at Greenhill Yacht and Country Club. Greenhill is one of the oldest clubs on the shore and is always a treat to visit. Jim has had his hands full with the amount of rainfall the Salisbury area has received so far this spring and early summer. We are all hoping for things to dry out quickly. Thanks also to the Head Professional, Mark Calendar and his staff. They were very helpful with keeping our golf and scoring organized. The day was great and the scores not so great. Maybe a credit to two kegs on the golf course. Except for a few it looks as though most of our members are working hard at their jobs and not at their golf game. Hopefully we will see improvement when we clean up our clubs and head for Glen Riddle!

A reminder, Glen Riddle is the last stop on the ESAGCS Championship Series. A score must be posted from Glen Riddle to be eligible for the trophy! Brush up on your links style play as we will be playing the War Admiral course.
A Concern:
It was brought to my attention after the June meeting at Greenhill Yacht and Country Club, that the use of cellphones on the golf course is becoming very annoying to your fellow members. Cellphones have been banned by many clubs and associations in our area. The ESAGCS has not taken that step yet. Please refrain from using your cellphone on the golf course with the exception of listening to messages. Cell phone use on the golf course is annoying to your fellow members and also interrupts the steady flow of play. Remember, it has always been a rule of the association, to ban cell phone use during our meetings. Let's be courteous to our fellow members and take that one step further to the golf course!
Correction:
I was quickly (and do I mean quickly) corrected after last month's posting concerning Paul Tideman's
Hole-In-One at Winged Foot. I falsely reported that this was Paul's first. I'm not one to ever slight anyone, this was Paul's third one. I will not go into the lengthy details about each one as I was told.... but yes Paul, I stand corrected, this was your third. No, you still will not be able to claim the other two for the Sports Aggregates Hole-In-One prize. Sorry!Player of the Year:
Individual points continue to add up from each meeting. Please be aware in order to gain points for attendance each player must be on time to the meeting and turn in a valid scorecard for that outing to be eligible for the attendance points. I will post current standings of the top 10 shortly.
Don't Forget:
To thank the Eagle Sponsors and all the other sponsors of the ESAGCS. Their help makes all of our meetings possible.
To send any golf pictures or outing tidbits to me so we can post on our website. It is always fun and interesting to see and hear about these happenings.
"Respect the Game"
Congratulations to Paul Tideman, former two time ESAGCS Player of the
Year, for his recent Hole-In-One. Paul, aced the 190 yard par three at
the esteemed Winged Foot C.C. West Course, site of the 2006 U.S. Open.
Paul smoothed a Callaway 4 hybrid for his first career hole-in-one. Paul
did mention that it was not skulled referring to an ESAGCS historical
inaccuracy about the quality of my 1997 hole-in-one at Great Hope.
Tideman did ask if this would qualify for the Sports Aggregates
Hole-In-One prize. He was immediately shot down.
Congratulations Paul!
Call it an old wives tail, folklore or whatever you want to call it but
many have asked about the origination and rules for the ESAGCS Player of
the Year Award.
The origination of the ESAGCS Player of the Year started in 2005. It
started out like an old fish tale, many of the members swilling some
lager after a Tuesday ESAGCS round of golf. The stories were fabricated
with many opportunities made and many more missed. Player after player
spoke of how he left more shots on the course than the rest. There were
even a few just missed "Holes-in-Ones" as well. The stories got longer
and the tales got louder. With all the bantering, brew chugging and
story telling going on amongst the golfing elite and not so elites,
there was no way to truthfully lay claim to the best of the ESAGCS. One
member suggested clubbing each other with Titanium Drivers to see who
stands last. The ESAGCS Board thought differently, thus instituting
rules and guidelines for the establishment of the ESAGCS Player of the
Year. No more stories..no more fabrications...and no more arguments over
who is the best. So it is said...so it is done the ESAGCS Player of the
Year, the POTY is born.
Rules for the award encompass not only golfing skills but participation
at the ESAGCS meetings as well. It is believed that to be the POTY, one must
be present at a majority of the meetings therefore showing his
participation in the association. At each meeting a member can rack up
points for the title. Two points are given for full participation in a
meeting, that is coming on time to the meeting, lunch and participating
in the golf outing with the finality being a signed and attested
scorecard! Three points are give for a first place, two points for a
second and one point for a third. One point is given for
closest-to-the-pin and one point for longest drive. A new rule
instituted for this year's POTY is that four points will be given to the
Gross and Net winner of the ESAGCS Championship. The final round this
year to be held at Glen Riddle. Track your progress on the new ESAGCS
Website under golf notes.
The inaugural season was in 2006 and this was won by Paul Tideman of
Golf Car Specialties. Paul won it again in 2007, successfully defending
his 2006 title. No member can win POTY three consecutive years. The 2008
award went to John Anderes of Queenstown Harbor Golf Links. A handsome
prize is given out each year to the winner. A special thanks goes to Genesis Turf
for sponsoring the ESAGCS Player of the Year since its inaugural season
in 2006.
So come out and lay claim to 2009 crown. There is only one way to etch
your name on the cup and that is to participate!
Respect the Game!
